The Building Inspection Services Department is primarily responsible for overseeing new construction of and alterations to commercial and residential buildings. Plans are reviewed and permits issued within the restrictions of the State and Village codes.

The Property Maintenance/Fire Inspection Department respond to citizen complaints and make regular inspections for code violations, weeds, trash, graffiti, nuisance vehicles and snow removal.

Fire inspections are done twice yearly. The first inspections are completed January 1 to June 30, and the second are completed July 1 to December 31.

West Milwaukee is very concerned about the negative impact of graffiti on the community. Section 14-436 of the Municipal Code requires the owner of a property to remove or cover up any graffiti damage within 30 days. Although removal can be time consuming and create a financial burden, studies have shown that failure to cover-up graffiti in a timely fashion will generally result in an “explosion” of additional graffiti in the surrounding area. Police officers and the Village’s Property Maintenance Inspector share the responsibility for the prevention and elimination of graffiti, while the Property Maintenance Inspector works with property owners on options for removal.

 

Milwaukee County Home Repair Program. The Milwaukee County Housing Division provides a Home Repair program funded by federal CDBG and HOME funds by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in suburban County communities excluding the Cities of West Allis and Milwaukee. The program offers 0% interest loans to income qualified homeowners to make necessary repairs, correct code violations, and receive accessibility modifications. Staff assists clients by creating a detailed scope of work and works with private contractors to receive bids for the work to be done. Homeowner(s) review bids received and select a contractor from cost reasonable bids. Once a contractor is selected, the Homeowner(s) will sign a Loan Agreement and Promissory Note with the County. The loan is secured by a Lien on the owner’s real estate. The County will facilitate an agreement with the contractor for the work to be completed per the scope. After the project is completed, the County pays contractors from loan funds. The Homeowner(s) pay the County back according to the terms of the loan.
