Village Board and Tourism Commission Meeting

There will be a Village Board and Tourism Commission meeting on Monday, May 1, 2023. The Tourism Commission meeting will begin at 5:30p.m. The Legislative Committee meeting will follow the Finance Committee meeting scheduled to begin at 6:00pm. The regular Village Board meeting is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.  The meetings will be held in the Village Board Room at the West Milwaukee Community Centre located at 1345 S. 47th St.

Highlighted in this issue is the 2nd Annual Senior Prom on page 32. Last year, this event welcomed over 100 seniors from the community for a fun-filled afternoon with lunch, sweets, dancing, a live band and MORE! Many attendees had previously never attended an event like this before, so our Senior Prom was the perfect way to warm their hearts and to connect them with others in the community.

Reignite old rivalries and meet up with old friends at the 48th Annual Alumni Basketball Tournament. Mark your calendars for December 21 and 22 at Lane Intermediate. Bragging rights are on the line once again so sign your team up for $25 and get ready for a great time. We hope you are as excited as we are to get together, reminisce and play some fun, competitive basketball.

New course offerings this session include Yoga for Mental Health for participants 13 years of age and older. These courses are designed to help you use yoga as a tool to live your best life along with bringing you a brighter state of physical health and mental well-being. Some topics discussed are Depression Relief, Stress Release and Management and ADD, ADHD & AUDHD Management.

Each guide includes a portion in the back to Champion for a Child, where you can donate to the WAWM RCS Scholarship Fund. Recent research has shown that children from lower income families are less likely to participate in sports. Over 60% of the students in our district qualify for free or reduced meals which leave little to no discretionary money to enroll in youth programs or safe alternatives for after school activities. The Champion for a Child Scholarship Fund provides an opportunity to the children in our community and your donation will ensure that our students can reap all the benefits that youth sports and safe outlets have to offer. Any donation is welcome and gratefully appreciated.

Inside the guide are ways to get involved either by becoming a part-time team member, a volunteer coach or even a referee. Training is involved with each offering and is a great way to learn and impact our programs. These are just a small portion of what’s inside of the 2023 Winter/Spring Activity Guide which will launch on Monday, November 14. W. Greenfield Avenue Reconstruction Project Acquisitions and Temporary Easements

The Village of West Milwaukee will be reconstructing W. Greenfield Avenue from S. 56th Street to Miller Park Way. Construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 2024. To provide the right-of-way necessary for this construction, the Village needs to purchase additional land or easements from some of the property owners whose properties abut the project area. Temporary Easement is permission to enter, easements of a limited duration or time or other similar written permission for the purposes of temporary access, construction, repair or maintenance.

The Village has retained Single Source, Inc., of Brookfield, Wisconsin, to appraise and acquire the needed additional right of way or easements. Please see The Rights of Landowners Under WI Eminent Domain Law  for more information regarding the acquisition process. A survey crew from GRAEF will begin staking the new right-of-way limits in early November 2022, weather permitting. The staking will be done at those locations where the purchase of new land or temporary easements is necessary. It will assist property owners and our acquisition agent in understanding where changes in the right-of-way limits will occur, or where the easement areas will be located. Some of the property right-of-way will be acquired in the form of fee acquisition (permanent land purchase) and some in the form of temporary easements (for restoring driveways or yard areas that will expire upon completion of the project). West Milwaukee Seeks Bilingual Poll Workers

Election Inspectors (Poll Workers)

Election Inspectors are essential to conduct open, accurate, and fair elections. Their priority is to ensure every eligible voter can exercise their right to vote by following Election Day procedures and providing excellent customer service to voters.

The Village of West Milwaukee is in need of bilingual (fluent in English/Spanish speaking) poll workers.

  • Qualifications
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be 18 years old (except qualified high school student poll workers)
  • Be a resident of Milwaukee County
  • Never have been convicted of a felony and not otherwise disqualified from voting
  • Be able to read and write fluently in the English language
  • Not be a candidate for any office to be voted on at the polling place at that election.

Pay

Election Inspectors receive $135 for working a full Election Day.

In order to receive payment, the appropriate paperwork must be completed.

*New Election Inspectors are pending Village Board approval.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Check-in Registered Voters
  • Register Eligible Voters
  • Monitor Voting and Ballot Marking Equipment
  • Assist and Guide Voters
  • Assist Chief Inspector as needed

Experience, Skills, and Abilities

  • Skills – Must possess excellent customer service skills. Strong clerical and analytical skills. Detail-oriented. Active listener. Must possess good oral communication skills.
  • Abilities – Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.

Training Requirement 

Election inspectors are required to attend a 2-3 hour training class every two years.
