​NEW CDC GUIDELINES FOR VACCINATED PEOPLE    

Last week, the CDC announced new guidance for fully vaccinated individuals to stop wearing masks or social distancing in most indoor and outdoor settings, regardless of size. This decision was based on the impact of the vaccines, which have proven to be safe and extraordinarily effective.

Key exceptions to this guidance, even for fully vaccinated, include visiting medical facilities like doctor’s offices or hospitals, long-term care facilities, or when traveling via airplane, bus, train, or other modes of public transportation. In these situations, masks should still be work and social distancing practiced. In addition, the CDC continues to recommend masking and social distancing for in-person learning settings for children. Full CDC guidelines available here.

As part of the shift from mass vaccination sites to more targeted locations, the Milwaukee Health Department will begin providing walk-in vaccinations at three public libraries.

Bringing vaccine access to convenient and familiar locations within neighborhoods is an important part of equity. Below please find some featured locations for Milwaukee neighborhoods or communities. Click It Or Ticket Campaign Starts May 24

The West Milwaukee Police Department will join thousands of law enforcement agencies for this year’s Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign, one of the nation’s most important highway safety efforts. From May 24 through June 6, 2021, the West Milwaukee Police Department will join officers statewide and nationwide, to patrol for longer hours to reinforce one safety message – BUCKLE UP.

The annual campaign coincides with the first summer travel holiday. Wisconsinites are anxious to resume their holiday traditions and that often includes a long weekend getaway or a day trip. With an increased number of cars flooding the roads for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, it’s vital that we get the word out about the importance of wearing a seat belt.

Currently, 89% of Wisconsin motorists wear safety belts. The 11 percent who fail to buckle up accounted for 43% of all the drivers and passengers killed in Wisconsin traffic crashes in 2020.

Wisconsin’s primary seat belt law, in place since 2009, allows law enforcement to stop and cite motorists for failing to wear a seat belt. Drivers can also be cited for every unbuckled passenger in their vehicle. Penalties are higher for transporting unrestrained children. Failure to fasten a seat belt is among the most common traffic violations in Wisconsin, resulting in more than 27,000 traffic convictions last year.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2019, 55% of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m.–5:59 a.m.) were not wearing their seat belts. That’s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign is nighttime enforcement.

We aren’t handing out tickets for the thrill of it. Wearing a seat belt is not only the law, it can save your life.  If you know a friend or a family member who does not buckle up when they drive, please ask them to consider changing their habits. Help us spread this life-saving message before one more friend or family member is killed as a result of this senseless inaction. Seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult — needs to remember to buckle up every trip, no matter how long.

National Public Telecommunicator Week is  April 11-17^th.  Our dispatchers are the first people you speak with when calling the Police Department, they are the ones who dispatch the officers to calls, handle the inquires at the front window, and process all clerical work for the Police Department.

National Telecommunicator Week is held every year during the second week of April and honors telecommunications personnel in the public safety community. This week-long event is a time to celebrate and thank those who dedicate their lives to serving the public. It is a week that should be set aside so everyone can be made aware of their hard work and dedication.

HISTORY:

National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week was first conceived by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County (Calif.) Sheriff’s Office in 1981 and was quickly adopted in Virginia and North Carolina. By the 1990s, the national association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) convinced Congress of the need for a formal proclamation. In 1994, “National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week” was formally recognized and is celebrated each year during the second full week of April to coincide with National 9-1-1 Education Month.

• Lynn has over 20 years of service as a dispatcher at WMPD
• Holly is our Lead Dispatcher/Clerk, has over 15 years of service as a dispatcher and 13 years at WMPD
• Mandy has 5 years of service as a dispatcher and 2.5 years at WMPD
• Tony has 2 years of service as a dispatcher, all being at WMPD
• Katie has over 5 years of service as a dispatcher and has been with WMPD part time since August 2020
